Do you still take B&W pictures with your old film camera? Do you feel that B&W photographs taken with a digital camera are less dramatic than the ones taken with B&W film? Has that that kept you from switching to digital? If you have a camera that has a preset B&W, should you take the shots in this mode or is it best to shoot in color mode and then convert in Photoshop? What happens if you don't have a camera with the B&W preset? Will you ever be able to take striking Black and Whites? Do you need to use screw-on filters to achieve the classic B&W? What about infrared pictures taken with a digital camera? These are just a few questions you will find answers to in this incredible photography course.

In this course, you will rekindle your old love and passion for B&W photography or fall in love with it for the first time. What in the old days was considered a true art, the darkroom art, now is performed in Photoshop through a series of tools and filters. You will learn how to master these secrets and become an artist yourself! Have you ever dreamed of selling your B&W photographs or giving them to family and friends as unique gifts? Would you like to showcase them in an art gallery or simply on your living room walls? Now you can. After taking this class, not only will you discover how to post-process your digital color photographs into B&W or infrared, but you will also learn how to showcase them at their best using frames, borders and vignetting.

After learning how to turn your color digital images into TRUE B&W, you will also learn how to improve their look using techniques such as dodging and burning. For example, selectively darkening the sky or making a person’s eyes lighter, as if they were glowing. In addition, you will learn how to add grain to mimic the look of a highly sensitive film such as ISO 1600. We will also experiment with digital effects like the old Sabattier, Solarization or the Emboss effect, and the great Sepia toning look just to name a few. Your portfolio will scream ART!

Due to the nature of this class, it will be exclusively taught by Danilo Piccioni.

Course Outline:

Lesson one: How to Convert a Color Photograph into TRUE B&W
If you think that there are more colors than there are shades of gray and B&W. Think again. There are sixteen million shades of gray in B&W digital images. During this week you will learn many different ways to convert your color images into B&W. We will examine each method and I will explain in detail which ones to avoid and why. You will also learn how to create actions that will enable you to automate these conversions.

Lesson two: A Golden World
Sepia toning has always been one of my favorite looks. Sepia toning is also a favorite look for many photographers from the old days and even in the modern world of photography. We still feel sepia is the best way to convey emotions and moods. Think of sepia as a middle ground between B&W and COLOR. This week it's all about sepia toning, you will discover ways to turn a color or B&W picture into sepia.

Lesson three: Creating Fine Art from your B&W
To improve your B&W images, there are several handy tools and filters available in Photoshop. You will learn how to selectively Dodge and Burn, add Grain, optimize the tonal range with Levels and Curves, and recreate fine art effects such as Solarization, the Sabattier effect, Bas Relief and Emboss.

Lesson four: The Magic Glow of Infrared Photography
This old form of art is still with us today! In this last lesson, you will learn how to achieve infrared from your digital captures. And you will learn how to creatively present your work using effects like Vignetting, adding frames and borders to your masterpieces.
