Instructor: Bruce Smith

Bruce SmithI began my 30-year career by getting fired as a photo assistant after two years of brewing tea, sweeping the studio floors and fetching equipment for several studio photographers. I decided to go solo and set up my own photo studio, specializing in shooting models’ portfolios, portraits and the occasional fashion shoot.

I was inspired by the photographers from the ‘30s to the ‘60s, including Cecil Beaton, Norman Parkinson, David Baily, Barry Lategan, John F French, Horst P Horst, William Klein, Irving Penn, Richard Avendon, George Hoyningen-Huene, and many more.

My first big break in fashion photography came while setting up a test shoot with a model, I arranged to borrow some Fifties’ style gowns from a top fashion designer that sold her clothes through exclusive stores such as Harrods in London. This test shoot became a commission, and the pictures that I produced were published in Avante Guard, one of the UKs leading fashion magazines, at the time.

I switched to shooting just fashion and set off to London in the early Eighties. Confident and adventurous, I was on the ladder to establishing myself as a freelance fashion shooter. The next few years were spent developing my own style and reputation, test shoots with models and endless appointments with fashion editors, art directors, designers and potential clients.

I mailed samples of my work to the couture and bridal wear designers, and I was picked up by Catherine Raynor - a leading UK bridal wear couture designer who had previously worked with some of the world’s most prestigious photographers including Norman Parkinson, Terrance Donavan and John Swanell. Raynor commissioned me to shoot her next collection. Her status within the bridal wear industry, and the success of the images that I had produced for her, created a chain reaction with a queue of top bridal wear and couture designers clambering at my studio door to shoot their collections.

The next major step came with a commission from a leading UK bridal wear consumer magazine to shoot two editorial stories for them on location in Tobago. This led to many years of shooting high fashion for some of the top designers, and manufacturers of couture and bridal wear.

Inspired by some of my classic fashion images, art directors from top London design consultancies asked me to present my portfolio to them, with the view to shooting an image brochure for Charnos a leading lingerie company in the UK. This began a long list of lingerie and hosiery clients commissioning me to shoot their collections including, Charnos Hosiery, Panache Lingerie, Silhuette Lingerie, Bravissimo Lingerie, Johnathon Aston Hosiery, Levante Hosiery and Lapele Lingerie, etc Some of whom I am still shooting for to this day.

I shot many image brochures and catalogues, with fashion shoots in some of the some of world most beautiful and exotic locations from Alaska to Kenya. Shooting catalogues on location, with all of its challenges, taught me to shoot fast with available light. I was commissioned to arrange the complete production for bi-annual fashion shoots, including the sourcing of the production teams, location managers, catering, location transport, even helicopters and arctic supply vessels.

In the late 90s I began shooting in digital. There are so many benefits, its speed of production for press and post-production regarding retouching, etc, which is now in my own hands, ensuring my images get reproduced how I envisage them to be.

Instructor: Dave Nitsche

David NitscheDave Nitsche picked up a camera 20 years ago, but his first journey into photography only lasted a mere 6 months. He consistently had a creative outlet for his thoughts and emotions, having always been involved in the arts as a guitarist, graphic designer, and web developer. But, eventually career changes and life put him in a place where he had never been before. Eighteen years after he had sold his Canon A1 he decided to try photography once again. In 2002, he bought his first digital camera. Dave’s engaging creativity and memorable photos have not stopped since. Dave's goal from the very beginning was to merge human emotion into non-human environments using what ever 'stuffs' (mannequins, glass, guns, fire, etc.) necessary. During that process he strived to be as original as possible. His images are steeped in expressionism, color, and contrast, but cover a wonderful variety of categories that it becomes hard to place them in just one. His work has been admired and praised by critics, photographers, artists and the public in general, via various shows, publications and galleries, for their ability to conjure feelings in people that are very deep, very personal, and usually reserved for living things.

The scope of Dave's work does not stop at conceptualism or expressionism. He is a fan of all types of imagery and is quite fond of moving from style to style. His website includes all forms of innovative imagery for you to view. Enjoy his images and his vision as much as he does. Dave’s colorful and inspiring photography may be viewed at http://www.davenitsche.com.

Instructor: David Langley

David LangleyMy worst day as a commercial photographer was still a great day!

Having completed more than 5,400 commercial assignments around the world and the recipient of more awards than the entire cast of the Titanic, David Langley truly IS the icon of Advertising Photographers world-wide! David has shot ads for just about every American corporation. Not just one, two or a handful of American corporations, but David has shot advertising campaigns for almost every Fortune 500 company out there. You don’t command this kind of attention and get this kind of work unless you are that good. David IS that good! David is also one of the founding members of APA, (Advertising Photographers of America).

The once elusive Pot of Gold at the end of the rainbow can now be found here at PPSOP with David offering up his wealth of expertise in our Six-Month Commercial Photography Course.

“After teaching at the Pratt Institute, The School of Visual Arts and for the Hallmark Institute of Photography, I feel strongly, that many photography schools require far too many “fluffy” courses in order to get that degree or certificate of completion. And truth be told, these required ‘fluffy’ courses are the reason it can take up to four years to get that ‘prized’ degree. When it comes down to actually being there in the real world of Advertising Photography, practical and useful courses are sadly lacking at many of these schools. That is why I am so excited to be part of PPSOP and their Six Month Commercial Photography Course because it cuts out the “fluff” and spends all its time on what matters most-“picture making NOT picture taking!”

“To the best of my knowledge, NO photographer has ever been awarded an assignment on the basis of his/her diploma or certificate of completion. It is the photographer's portfolio that gets him or her the job, plain and simple. Through a combination of challenging assignments and some “no-holds barred” critiques, every PPSOP student enrolled in this course will soon learn and understand what it takes to create a ‘working portfolio’.”

Instructor: Robin Nichols

Robin NicholsLike many photography teachers, I’m in the envious position of being able to combine one of my life’s passions, photography, with my job. And, even though I tend to spend way too much time in front of the computer, it remains one of the best jobs in the world...

Though born in the UK, I’ve spent the past 20 years in Sydney. I began work in Australia as a cameraman in the audio-visual business, then a freelance photographer. More recently, I worked as a contributing freelance writer for several photo-centric publications, then as a full-time magazine editor for more than eight years. For the past eight years, I’ve run my own publishing business, Better Digital Magazine, producing Australia’s best-selling specialist digital photo techniques publication: Better Digital magazine.

With this publication I’ve aggressively pursued the goal of producing clear, well-illustrated publications written in simple English and have continued to develop this plain-speaking style in other specialist magazines such as Better Photoshop Techniques and Digital PhotoART (a project-based publication with a distinct ‘scrapbooking’ style).

When I’m not travelling, writing for one of my publications or conducting photo tours and workshops, I teach digital photography and Photoshop Elements classes at Sydney University.

There’s nothing I like better than showing newcomers how to fine-tune their compositional skills and then how to get the best from the resulting digital files using a program like Photoshop Elements.

My work can be seen in Better Digital magazine, or online:
